SEASONAL COLOR & VEGETABLE GARDENING

BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY SEASON, PRODUCTIVE ALL YEAR

Seasonal planting keeps a property looking composed as the year turns, and a kitchen garden brings homegrown produce to the table. On a large estate, that takes planning the year as a whole, the right plant choices, and steady seasonal attention, all handled by one in-house team that already knows the property.

Penning Landscapes is a family-owned, single-source landscape firm that has designed, built, and maintained estate gardens across Napa Valley since 1988.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Gardens that look intentional in every season

A great estate garden never looks accidental. In spring the borders fill in. By midsummer the kitchen garden is heavy with tomatoes and cutting flowers, and by autumn the beds have turned over to something just as considered.

That rhythm comes from planning the year as a whole and tending it on a steady cadence. Penning selects plants suited to Napa Valley’s soil, water, and climate, rotates color as the seasons turn, and keeps the beds clean and healthy in between.

Every rotation is built around your property and the way the principal likes to use it, from the entry drive that guests see first to the kitchen garden that supplies the table. No two estates get the same plan.

Seasonal Planting & Color

Seasonal planting keeps a property visually current as the year moves. It covers three connected pieces of work, all handled in-house by the Penning crews who maintain the rest of the landscape.

How Seasonal Color Rotation Works

Penning plans color across the whole year so the garden reads as deliberate in every season. Beds and containers are refreshed as plantings finish, with the next rotation already chosen and timed to take their place. The result is a property that looks composed in winter as much as at peak summer.

Expert Plant Selection & Replacement

Plant choice is where horticultural depth shows. Penning selects species suited to your site's light, soil, and water, and replaces tired or struggling plantings before they pull a whole bed down. Choosing the right plant for the right spot is what keeps a garden looking full without constant do-overs.

Seasonal Clean-ups

Each season closes with a thorough clean-up: pruning, cutting back, leaf and debris clearing, and bed preparation for what comes next. These resets keep the garden tidy and give new plantings the room and light to establish. They are the quiet work that makes the showy work possible.

Vegetable Gardening

A kitchen garden is one of the clearest signs that a property is truly lived in. Penning's vegetable gardening earned the 2018 Gardenista Best Edible Garden Award for the Galleron Vegetable Garden in Napa Valley, and it is led by a dedicated Vegetable Garden Manager, Gemme Von Knopka. The garden is designed, planted, and tended as carefully as the ornamental landscape.

Custom Kitchen-Garden Design

Penning designs the garden around your space and what you actually want to grow, from raised beds and trellises to cutting flowers and herbs. Layout, sun, and access are planned so the garden is a pleasure to walk through and easy to harvest from. The design suits the property, not a catalog.

Planting and Ongoing Care

Gemme and the gardening crew handle planting, watering, feeding, and seasonal succession so the beds stay productive across the growing year. Care is matched to each crop, because a tomato, a fig, and a row of lettuce do not want the same thing. The garden is tended as part of your regular maintenance rhythm.

Harvest Support

When the garden comes in, Penning helps with harvest so produce is picked at its best and the beds keep producing. Spent plantings are cleared and the next round goes in, keeping the kitchen supplied through the season. It is homegrown produce without the guesswork of growing it yourself.

One Team

Penning Landscapes has designed, built, and maintained estate gardens across Napa Valley since 1988, now in its second generation under CEO Ben Penning. Seasonal planting and vegetable gardening are part of full-service estate care, not a separate vendor to manage. One in-house team plans the year, tends the beds, and answers for the result.

Because Penning maintains what it plants, choices are made for the long view. A bed is planned for how it will look in three years, not only on the day it goes in. That is the difference between a garden that matures and one that gets redone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does seasonal planting and color include on an estate?

It includes seasonal color rotations, expert plant selection and replacement, and seasonal clean-ups across the property. Penning plans the year so the garden looks composed in every season, then tends it on a steady cadence. The crews who maintain the wider landscape handle the planting work in-house.

Who designs and cares for a vegetable garden?

Penning's vegetable gardening is led by Gemme Von Knopka, the firm's dedicated Vegetable Garden Manager. She and the gardening crew handle design, planting, ongoing care, and harvest support. Penning's vegetable garden work earned the 2018 Gardenista Best Edible Garden Award for the Galleron Vegetable Garden in Napa Valley.

How often are seasonal plantings rotated or refreshed?

Rotations follow the seasons, so beds and containers are refreshed as plantings finish and the next round is timed to take their place. The exact cadence depends on the property, the plant palette, and how the gardens are used. Penning plans this as part of your regular maintenance schedule.

Do we need to be an existing maintenance client to add seasonal planting or a vegetable garden?

Seasonal planting and vegetable gardening are part of Penning's full-service Maintenance & Gardening care, so they fit naturally alongside an existing program. For estates not yet under Penning's care, a complimentary site visit is the place to start.

How do you keep new plantings healthy after they go in?

New plantings are watered, fed, and monitored as part of regular care, and supported by Penning's Plant Health & Resilience program, an organic, plant-based approach. Healthy soil and steady attention help plants establish and become more resilient to drought, heat, and pests. Choosing the right plant for each spot reduces replacement in the first place.

How does Penning manage water and irrigation on a large estate?

Water is one of the highest-stakes parts of estate care in wine country, and Penning manages it through a QWEL-certified water management team. They handle irrigation planning, audits, and seasonal water plans as part of the maintenance relationship, which keeps the landscape healthy while using water sensibly.
